Halte Assel was originally a train station. The halt was opened on May 15, 1876 and was located between Amsterdam station and Zutphen station. This stop was often used by King Willem III, from here he went to his hunting lodge and Paleis het Loo.

The restaurant was built around 1930 and the station closed five years later. During World War II, it was in operation for another year. In 1972, the station was completely demolished. The restaurant remained standing and expanded over the years.
