On September 18, 1944 at 15:09, Allied air landings took place here on the Ginkel Heath, as part of Operation Market Garden. 1914 British paratroopers landed on the heath and this was the beginning of the liberation of the Netherlands. The air landings are commemorated annually at the monument.
