On September 18, 1944, at 3:09 p.m., Allied airborne landings took place here on the Ginkel Heath as part of Operation Market Garden. 1,914 British paratroopers landed on the heath, marking the beginning of the liberation of the Netherlands.
The airborne landings are commemorated annually at the monument.
