The forest rangers of Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen are organizing a bat-watching excursion on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at the Schaffelaar estate. Everyone has seen a bat at some point—whether during their erratic flight at dusk or in vampire movies. Our forest ranger will be happy to tell you the full story about these formidable mosquito hunters, who use techniques that humans have only mastered in the last hundred years. Various species of bats fly around the Schaffelaar estate, and each species differs in terms of hunting strategies, the prey they hunt, and the sounds they make. To explain this, the forest ranger will spend two hours wandering the estate with participants, along avenues and waterways. This is a unique opportunity, as the area is usually not accessible after sunset. Advance online registration is required.
Time: starts at 9:00 p.m. Duration: approx. 2 hours.
Participation fee: 6.00 euros per person; children ages 8–12: 3.00 euros per person; donors: 3.00 euros per person; children ages 8–12 of donors: 1.50 euros per person upon presentation of a valid GLK donor card.
Tip from the forest ranger: Our forest rangers know where to find the bats. However, we cannot guarantee that you’ll see or hear any bats. Whether they’re active enough to be heard or seen depends in part on the weather conditions. After all, it’s nature. The excursion will be canceled in case of rain, thunderstorms, or very strong winds. Suitable for children ages 8 and up.
