Heath Week 2025: Heath is there for you - Hoge Veluwe National Park

At the end of August, you will have the unique opportunity to cut your own bush of heather on De Hoge Veluwe. You may of course take your own heather bush home with you.

De Hoge Veluwe National Park stands for well-considered management of its grounds and the associated flora and fauna. One of the types of terrain in the Park is heathland. If nature were allowed to take its full course, the heathlands would eventually turn into forest. This is often visible by the emerging Scots pines and rough birch, as well as grasses such as pipeweed. To preserve the heathland, various management methods are used such as grazing, burning off, ploughing and mowing. In a place where the management method of mowing is used, the Park is offering a unique opportunity this summer. Because why not give our visitors the chance to cut a bunch of flowering heather and take it home, before the heather plot is mowed in the fall?

Interested visitors can pick up a Hei is good voucher at the information desk in the Museonder in advance until 4 p.m. With the voucher they can cut their own patch of heather at the specified location. At the location, nature guides will provide information about heathland management, there will be sod cutters present to tell all about how smallholders used the heath at the beginning of the last century, and of course a beekeeper will be present to tell all about his profession and his bees and the role of the heathland for the bee. Although there are some pruning shears on site, to avoid queues, it is advisable to bring your own from home.

The site can be reached on foot (1.5 km from paved road) or by bicycle (4 km from Museonder/Park Pavilion). There is also a circular walk from the Museonder to the site and back; this will take you about 45 minutes each way.

In brief:
Tip: Bring your own pruning shears.
