Nightjar excursion, Wekeromse Zand

Nightjar excursion, Wekeromse Zand

WEKEROM - The forest rangers of Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen are organizing a nightjar excursion at the Wekeromse Zand on Saturday, June 21, 2025. The nightjar or goat warbler flies mainly at dusk and in the dark. Its song is an unusual, trilling sound that it makes after sunset, sitting from a lookout. The contact call of a nightjar is easiest to detect by listening carefully. It is a soft but sharp call, repeated frequently to make contact with conspecifics. During the day, the bird lies still on the ground and relies on its plumage with camouflage colors. This makes the species difficult to detect during the day. With any luck, it can be heard and/or seen at night on the Wekeromse Zand. A unique opportunity, because normally the area is not accessible after sunset. Booking in advance online is necessary.
Time: start at 9 p.m. Duration: approx. 2.5 hours.
Participation: 10.00 euro p.p., donors 5.00 euro p.p. on presentation of a valid GLK donor card.
Tip from the forester: bring something to sit on, because we may have to wait some time to hear or observe the bird. Because of the loose sand, this excursion is only suitable for people with good mobility. Wearing sturdy walking shoes is recommended. Due to the late hour and necessary silence, this hike is not suitable for children. Our foresters know in which places the nightjar can be found, however, we cannot give a 100% guarantee of hearing and seeing these birds. Whether they are well heard and seen depends partly on weather conditions. It remains nature.
