A piece of history in nature:
Go back in time with us and experience the atmosphere of peace and mystery. The Batenburg duck decoy is normally not open to the public. This is because peace and quiet in the cage is very important. Under the guidance of the forester you get the unique opportunity to visit the cage. The forester takes the participants around the cage pond and tells about the history and operation of the duck decoy, the work of the decoyman, the vegetation on the site and its management. Along the way, you will experience an atmosphere of peace and mystery at the duck decoy.
Duck decoys were formerly used to catch ducks for consumption. The duck decoy consists of a large pond to which several narrow ditches flow, the so-called catching pipes. With tame ducks and a decoy dog, wild ducks were lured and caught. About 119 registered duck decoys still exist in the Netherlands. Many decoys have only one catching pipe ready for use. The duck decoy in Batenburg, however, is fully operational and in its original state. Advance reservations online are required.
Tip from the forester: Bring binoculars.
