On Ascension Day, Thursday, May 29, 2025, you can enjoy free dew walking in the Park. A wonderful opportunity to see the Park awaken at a time when the Park's gates are normally still closed.
Between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., hikers, cyclists and equestrians pay no entrance fee to the Park. Cars are welcome at the regular rate only from 8 a.m., of course you can park in the parking lots near the entrances (at regular rate) before then. Fancy a nice breakfast? The Restaurant De Hoge Veluwe is open on Ascension Day from 6:30 am for a delicious breakfast buffet (book in advance).
Dauwtrappen is an ancient custom, where people used to get up as early as 3:00 a.m. to dance on the grass singing and barefoot. This is where the term dew treading comes from. People believed in the healing effects of the dew on the grass. Still thousands of Dutch people go out every year on Ascension Day to go dauwtrappen.
