What was the role and position of women in the Middle Ages.
Tour guides of Hernen Castle, all volunteers, are constantly busy studying everything about ‘their’ castle and its inhabitants. And they often do not stop there. They are also interested in all kinds of interesting facts, from large to small, especially from the period between 1200 and 1600. About what they have come across and what is worth telling, they would like to share with you.
Before the castle opens they like to share their fascination with …. At 11:00 we start with a cup of coffee/tea with some goodies. After which the lecture will start in the knights’ hall. Of course you can visit the rest of the castle afterwards.
This day Alice Waterreus shares her fascination….women in the Middle Ages.
My interest in the Middle Ages started in my school days with the stories about kings, knights, vikings and crusades: men, that is.
From the way the Middle Ages have long been looked at, the image emerged that women played no significant role. A closer look reveals a more nuanced picture.
What was the position of women in medieval society. What was her position in the family and what work was she allowed to do in medieval society. Alice will also tell about 5 remarkable women, whose life histories have been preserved, because they did play an important role.
Entrance includes coffee/tea and sweets and afterwards a tour of the castle.
