Owl excursion, Doorwerth castle

DOORWERTH - The rangers of Geldersch Landschap & Kasteelen are organizing an owl excursion at Doorwerth Castle on Friday, Dec. 22, 2023. Long shrill "hoeoeoe hoe hoe hoe hoeoe" or a sharp "kewik": hear the call of the tawny owl. Spooky in the dark? Join the forest ranger for an owl walk around Doorwerth Castle. The tawny owl is the most common owl in the Netherlands. There are about 5,500 breeding pairs in our country. Yet it is rarely seen and most people have never even heard this bird in real life. And that while many people do know the sound of the tawny owl. The tawny owl is the only owl that calls "owl" very clearly. Many American horror films that feature an owl use the sound of the European tawny owl. In December and January, prior to breeding, tawny owls establish their territory. They do this by clearly sounding their call. In addition to the tawny owl, there is also a chance to hear the barn owl, long-eared owl and perhaps even the little owl. Take advantage of this unique opportunity, because usually the area is not accessible after sunset. The foresters know where to find the owls, but we cannot guarantee hearing these birds. Whether the owls make themselves heard depends, among other things, on weather conditions. It is still nature. Booking in advance online is necessary.
Time: start at 7 p.m. Duration: approx. 2 hours.
Participation: 8.00 euro p.p., donors 3.00 on presentation of a valid GLK donor card.
Tip from the forester: participants should take into account the weather conditions. It may be cold, wet and even slippery. Bringing a light is handy. Silence is necessary. Children under 12 and dogs cannot participate.
