Join our guides and discover all about the life of the wolf in the Netherlands. During a beautiful walk through the Veluwe forests you will get answers to questions such as: How do we recognize wolf tracks? And what can we do if we find those tracks? What should we do if we encounter a wolf? What is the role of the wolf in the ecosystem? How do wolves live? What do they hunt and how many miles do they walk in a day? Do humans and wolves go together? And what is the challenge for conservationists in the future?
This activity is designed for adults and children ages 12 and up. The walk is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the walking distance is about 4 km.
The wolf is definitely back in the Netherlands after a wolf female officially settled in the northern part of the Veluwe and met a male. The male and female had five cubs in 2019. In addition to this wolf pack on the northern Veluwe, there are probably three pairs present in our country: one definitely in the Drenthe/Fryslân region and two possible pairs on the Veluwe.
Many people know very little about how the wolf lives. Natuurmonumenten therefore works with other organizations to provide information about the wolf. In areas where wolves establish themselves, for example, Natuurmonumenten works together with sheep farmers to ensure that their livestock is protected. Natuurmonumenten also organizes special wolf excursions to provide information about wolf behavior and how we as humans can live peacefully with this animal.
During this excursion we will not see any wolves, but during the walk through the Veluwe forests the guides will talk extensively about the wolf in the Netherlands. Of course there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions along the way.
