On Dec. 31, the Veluwse Midwienterhoornbloazers from Epe will give a demonstration of this wonderful tradition.
A midwinter horn is a traditional wooden wind instrument used today mainly in the eastern part of the Netherlands. The midwinter horn is a message/signal utensil and not a musical instrument.
The midwinter horn has no valves or holes to influence the tones. The different tones can be blown by increasing or decreasing the lip tension.
According to time-honored tradition, Gelderland and Overijssel Midwinter Horn Blowers blow only from the first Sunday of Advent (four Sundays before Christmas) through Three Kings (January 6).
The purpose of blowing is to dispel darkness and call forth the Light. Traditionally a remnant of Yule celebrations, after Christianization also the announcement of the birth of Jesus.
The purpose of blowing is described in the following saying:
“She bloas um turn the message vèdan,
that it must go dark because the light is coming.
Location: Marchantplein and center area, you can attend the demonstration for free, you only pay the entrance ticket to the Park.
