National Park de Hoge Veluwe: 'Market Garden to liberation' cycling excursion

Discover the history of the Park during the period between September 1944 and April 1945. The nature guide will take you on a bicycle excursion along a route that tells the story of the occupation and liberation.
From our Branch in Otterlo you can easily rent a (e)bike and join the bicycle excursion. See our website for the availability of our bikes.

The National Park had weathered the war well until September 1944. That changed when Arnhem found itself in the firing line of Market Garden. In and around Arnhem, a dramatic battle was fought between the German occupiers and the Allies. This prompted the Germans to evacuate the residents of the city of Arnhem. En masse, residents were forced to leave for the north of the Netherlands. Many found shelter in the Open Air Museum, others found refuge in Apeldoorn and farther afield after many wanderings.

Not only the residents were forced to move but also facilities such as the Arnhem hospitals. On September 24, 1944 The Hoge Veluwe National Park was ordered to make room for the patients of the Arnhem hospitals. The Kröller-Müller Museum, which was largely empty because the art was housed in an air-raid shelter, the Jachthuis Sint Hubertus, the then coach house/service building and the Pampel were set up as a “Red Cross Hospitalâ€. In a short time an important piece of wartime history was written there.

Led by a nature guide, you can participate in an excursion in which you will visit the locations by bicycle. The sites will not be visited inside. The nature guide will tell you about the special features of the locations, using original photos. This tour will of course also reflect on the liberation of the Park by the 1st Canadian Army Corps and the Battle of Otterlo.

The price does not include entrance tickets to the Park. Reservations are required.
